Occupational Health and Safety Bill 2012 Under Review

The draft OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH BILL 2011 is now going for the second round of review. Interested people can email me to get a copy for review and feedback to appropriate authorities.

It is an exciting time in PNG right now. The National Elections have been completed and counting will start soon in most areas. Although Southern Highlands Province has already started the counting for the Ialibu-Pangia Open. There is also an increase in business activity, particularly in the mining and exploration, oil & gas and construction industries. As PNG goes through these changes, new laws, regulations and policies have to be written or reviewed. One such is the Occupational Health and Safety laws.

Occupational Medicine in PNG is non-existent right now. But I predict, it is something medical graduates in PNG may want to specialise in, in the years to come. Other health professionals may find themselves doing occupational health and travel medicine by default (like me!). It’s a situation of “swim or sink”.

I obtained a copy of the Occupational Health and Safety Bill 2011 and reading through it and will give my feedback. It’s an important milestone in PNG in the area of occupational medicine and something which I think health professionals in PNG either in the public service, NGOs or private industries should give an input to its development. If you want to review the draft bill, send me an email. I think this bill when it becomes a law will contribute significantly towards forming the foundation to develop occupational medicine in PNG.
